High fashion and haute couture are often mistakenly seen as one and the same. Haute couture is the hand tailoring of a single one of a kind piece for a specific person – the resulting clothes are of high quality, are costly and are considered a work of art. There are strict legal and labor laws regulating what can be called Haute Couture. In the 60s some high fashion designers were lured towards taking a piece of the larger market represented by the ready made/prêt-à-porter segment of fashion. Since then the high quality prêt-à-porter fashion shows, traditionally of the autumn and spring collections, are more numerous than the truly haute couture shows. It is telling that certain haute couture pieces and collections are being exhibited in shows at art museums around the world.
