The desire to adorn oneself with decorative items, whether placed directly on the skin or on clothing, is very deeply rooted. The oldest type of artefact, in fact, seem to be jewelry beads made out of shells and dating back 100,000 years. The purpose of the jewelry and whether it would be used to convey someone’s importance and status, as protection or omen of good luck following religious or cultural beliefs, or simply to increase one’s appeal, influenced the choice of materials to be used.
