Ancient civilizations studied the skies and kept track of the position of the sun, moon and planets for calendrical purposes and, some more than others, for astrological purposes. Later astronomy became crucial in navigation endeavors. Among the many things that Galileo Galilei is credited with, is the invention of the telescope.
